Maurice Kelly

As far back as we know, painters have always told a story of some sort and in some particular way, based on what they see of the world, and I see no reason why this need change.

I like to paint my own reaction to everyday life, the strange things that happen and the unexpectedness of it all.

A painting should be something to read, to work out the meaning of. Medieval folk did this with ease as they sat gazing up at their colourful and ornamented churches. Perhaps we should be learning to read the language of pictures all over again.

Exhibitions; Digby Gallery, Colchester; Young contemporaries; Gallery 44 Aldeburgh; Warwick university; ‘On the Border’, Minories, Colchester; Ipswich Art Society; Suffolk group from 1990. Collections: Germany, Hong Kong, USA, S Africa, Malta and UK.
