Colin Slee

I was born in Torquay, Devon in 1946, and attended the Newton Abbott College of Art from 1961 to 1964. I worked as a graphic designer for advertising agencies in Exeter and Bristol until 1982 after which I ran my own design studio until 1996. I had been visiting Suffolk for a few years and I fell in love with the county just at a time when I was looking for a change of direction professionally. The Suffolk coast gave me the impetus to paint full time and achieve an ambition held in check since leaving college in the mid-sixties. The sea and the rivers are the aspects that attract me most, but subjects do vary and other areas of the British Isles now appear in my work.

My aim is to create an expressive response to the environment - the ever-changing effects of the elements on water, skies, forests and the countryside inspire me to portray an atmospheric and emotional sense of place. I’m not an artist who can return to the same subject or format again and again so I need the stimulation of change in order to continue to evolve and explore new possibilities.

As the image "emerges" a feeling of "rightness" prevails - only then can one inhabit that space.

Exhibiting is an integral part of this whole process - the ultimate accolade.
